Sharing Stories
As part of the first ever appearance by members of the British Paraorchestra in Bahrain, Sharing Stories is a unique opportunity to hear directly from Charles Hazlewood and the musicians about what they do and why they do it. This session mixes music, conversation and the chance to ask questions about the history of the ensemble and the approach they take to music-making.
The British Paraorchestra is the world’s first professional ensemble of disabled musicians, founded by British conductor Charles Hazlewood in 2012, the same year that they memorably performed with Coldplay at the London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony. Performing in the UK and internationally the ensemble is pioneering a global movement to recognise and showcase disabled musicians with extraordinary abilities. Its mission is to end the limitations placed on them, not by their physical ability, but by lack of opportunity. Just as the Paralympics have achieved so effectively in sport, the British Paraorchestra is shifting perceptions of disability and disabled people by creating a visible platform for gifted disabled musicians to perform and excel at the highest level.
