The British Council in partnership with the Embassy Science & Innovation Network (SIN) are hosting a Waste to Energy Panel Discussion, which will be addressing the current landscape in Bahrain and discussing the processes, policies, and necessity of waste to energy technology and possible forms of future implementation.
Waste to Energy (WtE) refers to a variety of treatment technologies that convert waste into electricity, heat, fuel, or other materials, as well as a range of residues. Thermal waste to energy, also known as incineration with energy recovery, is a major waste treatment method in some developed countries and the most widely adopted technology that dominates the WtE market.
Waste management in Bahrain is becoming a critical issue as Askar, the only existing landfill/dumpsite in Bahrain is expected to reach its capacity within the next few years. Waste generation is increasing yearly, with waste coming from domestic, medical, agricultural and industrial sources; which varies in the risk that they pose. The limited size of the country, coupled with the increasing urban sprawl, together make the availability of safe disposal sites critical as waste is bound to have serious impacts on air, soil and groundwater quality in the surrounding areas. The government is trying hard to improve waste management scenario by launching recycling initiatives, waste-to-energy project and public awareness campaign.
