Information for parents

We will:

• teach your child with others of a similar age and level
• use a variety of materials to help your child learn, including coursebooks, games and other challenging projects and activities
• give your child lots of opportunities to use the language they are learning by speaking with other children and by practising a range of skills. This helps build their confidence and improves their grades at school
• use a range of different activities in each lesson to help children stay active and focused throughout the lesson. Different children learn in different ways as some learn through seeing, some through listening or through moving around - so a variety of activities will make sure all children learn well.

We will:

• use formative assessment to monitor your child's progress and to actively encourage students to take more responsibility for their own learning. Young learner students get a progress report at the end of each term. At the end of each academic year, there will be a summative test to determine your child's progress. We expect our young learners to remain in the same level for two years, and we have differentiated materials to allow for this. 

We’d like you to:

• talk to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about your child’s progress or participation
• come to the parent/teacher consultation where you will have the opportunity to speak to the teacher and discuss your child's progress.

We will:

• give your child homework every week to support what they have done in class
• check the homework in the next lesson.

We’d like you to:

• encourage your child in their learning, by looking at their 'My English Folder' after each lesson
• make sure your child does their homework before their next lesson.

Our rules:

• Follow instructions.
• Listen to teachers, staff and other students.
• Let everybody contribute and take part in classroom activities.
• Keep everybody safe.

We will:

• teach children that everybody is welcome and important at the British Council
• teach children about good classroom behaviour
• speak to your child when their behaviour is disruptive and explain to them why their behaviour is a problem. If your child's behaviour does not improve, we will speak to you about this and if they continue to behave badly, we may ask you to stop sending your child to classes
• only discuss your child’s behaviour with you (not other parents).

We’d like you to:

• work with us to help your child follow these rules.

We will:

• look after your child from when they arrive until you collect them
• children aged 6-10 years are not permitted to leave the premises alone. They must be collected by a parent or guardian from our designated collection point at the back of the building
• children or teenagers aged 11 years or older are only permitted to leave the premises alone if parental consent has been given in writing. Otherwise, they must be collected by the parent or guardian
• speak to you if your child has hurt him or herself.

We’d like you to:

• bring and collect your child on time using the designated pick up point at the back of the building
• let us know if your child will be absent for one or more lesson
• inform us of any ongoing illness your child may have such as asthma.
